About Us
Sacramento Maternal-Fetal Medicine Medical Group (Sac MFM) is a comprehensive high-risk pregnancy medical group. The maternal-fetal medicine physicians in our office have
provided care for women in Northern California for over 20 years. Our
physicians specialize in ultrasound, prenatal diagnosis, genetics, medical
and surgical complications of pregnancy, as well as the management of
multiple gestations (e.g. triplets, quadruplets). The entire office staff
dedicates itself to providing compassionate care to families who may be
experiencing complications during a pregnancy. Our office works closely
with your healthcare provider to ensure the highest level of care.
A maternal-fetal medicine physician is a physician who has completed
a four-year Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program and then
an additional two to three years of formal education and clinical
experience within an American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG)
approved Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship program. Fellowship training
provides additional education and practical experience in obstetrical,
medical, genetic, and surgical complications of pregnancy. There is
significant education and training in fetal ultrasound and prenatal
testing during a maternal-fetal medicine fellowship. This advanced
knowledge and experience allows these physicians to provide specialized
care to both the mother and her fetus (unborn baby).
A patient is referred to a maternal-fetal medicine physician if she
or her fetus may be at increased risk of complications during either
the pregnancy or following delivery. The patient will meet with a
maternal-fetal medicine physician for a consultation, an ultrasound exam
or perhaps both. Since there are many different types of appointments
available in our office, our staff will work with your healthcare provider
to ensure that you are scheduled for the appropriate appointment.
Patients referred to our office for an ultrasound examination
will usually be seen by one of our ultrasound technicians (sonographers) and
then by one of our maternal-fetal medicine physicians. An ultrasound
technician is a health care professional with education and experience
in the field of diagnostic ultrasound. The ultrasound technicians
within Sac MFM have specialized in the sonographic evaluation of fetal
anatomy, growth, monitoring of multiple gestations, as well as in assisting
maternal-fetal medicine physicians during ultrasound-guided procedures.
A patient may be referred to our office for genetic counseling
if she will be 35 years of age or older on her expected due date,
for a family history of genetic condition, or if her pregnancy may
be at increased risk of a birth defect or genetic condition. One of
our experienced genetic counselors provides this counseling. Genetic
counselors are healthcare professionals with graduate degrees and
experience in the areas of medical genetics and counseling.
Typically, your prenatal care continues with your healthcare
provider. Sac MFM works closely with your healthcare provider and rarely
is it necessary for our office to assume your prenatal care. If Sac MFM
does assume your prenatal care, then all of your prenatal visits would
be in the Sac MFM office. Additionally, you would be admitted to Mercy
San Juan Hospital for any hospitalizations, as well as for delivery.
You may develop complications during your pregnancy, which increase
your risk of a preterm birth, or your baby may need specialized neonatal
care immediately after birth. In these situations, you will need to be
hospitalized at a facility that has specialists dedicated to neonatal
care. The nursery at Mercy San Juan Hospital is a level III nursery
(the highest level possible). There are physicians, nurses and other
health care professionals at Mercy San Juan Hospital who have extensive
experience in the care of a premature infant or an infant who may
require specialized neonatal care.
Sac MFM accepts patients on a referral basis only. If you feel that
you could benefit from our services, please discuss your concerns with
your healthcare provider.
