Amniocentesis
A woman may be referred for an amniocentesis for the following reasons:
- She will be 35 years of age or older at the time of delivery
- There is a family history of a genetic condition
- Prenatal screening test indicates an increased risk of chromosome abnormality
- Ultrasound detects a birth defect
She would meet with a genetic counselor who reviews her medical, family and pregnancy
history prior to the amniocentesis procedure. The counselor discusses appropriate screening
and diagnostic testing options available and provides available education and resource
materials. Typically, counseling appointments are 45 minutes. After the counseling appointment,
an ultrasound examination will be performed. If the woman decides to have an amniocentesis,
then the procedure is performed using ultrasound guidance. Results of the amniocentesis are
available in 14 days. The woman’s healthcare provider receives a letter summarizing the
details of the appointment.
If you are scheduled for genetic counseling, an ultrasound exam then you should plan to
