Chorionic Villus Sampling
A woman may be referred for chorionic villus sampling (CVS) for the following reasons:
- She will be 35 years of age or older at the time of delivery
- There is a family history of a genetic condition
- First trimester screening indicates an increased risk of chromosome abnormality
- Ultrasound detected a fetal anomaly
The woman would meet with a genetic counselor who would review her medical, family and
pregnancy history. The counselor would discuss appropriate screening and diagnostic testing
options available and provide available education and resource materials. Typically,
counseling appointments are 45 minutes. After the counseling appointment, an ultrasound
examination will be performed. If the woman decides to have a CVS procedure, the CVS is
performed using ultrasound guidance. Results of the CVS are available in 10 to 14 days.
A preliminary result may be available within 1-2 days. The woman’s healthcare provider
receives a letter summarizing the details of this appointment.
If you are scheduled for genetic counseling and possible CVS procedure,
you should plan to be at our office for approximately 2 hours.
