Maternal-Fetal Medicine Consultation
If you have one or more of the following conditions, you may be referred for maternal-fetal
medicine counseling:
- A medical condition which may have been present prior to or developed during the
pregnancy (e.g. diabetes, high blood pressure, auto-immune condition, thrombophilia)
- A history of complications during a pregnancy (e.g. incompetent cervix, preterm labor,
preterm birth, pre-eclampsia, isoimmunization)
- A history of pregnancy losses
- Multiple gestation (twins, triplets, quadruplets, or more)
You will meet with a maternal-fetal medicine physician who reviews your medical, previous
pregnancy and family history. Any complications during the current pregnancy are discussed.
A physical exam is performed, if indicated. The physician will discuss the potential maternal
and fetal risks and make recommendations for tests and/or treatments that may improve the
likelihood of a successful pregnancy outcome. You should plan on being at our office for
approximately 45 minutes. Your healthcare provider receives a letter summarizing the details
of this appointment.
If you are scheduled for an ultrasound examination in addition to your counseling appointment
then you should plan to be at our office for approximately 2 hours.
In rare instances, our office will assume the prenatal care of a pregnant woman. This decision
will be based on the clinical situation, and only if the patient, referring healthcare provider
and our physician agree. We admit and deliver our patients at Mercy San Juan Hospital. The nursery
at Mercy San Juan Hospital is a Level III nursery (the highest level of care) and specializes
in the care of premature infants and those newborns that may require specialized care.
